We have rules about eating and drinking before surgery to help protect your child.  If anything is in her stomach as she is given anesthesia, it is possible that it could be "burped" up into her mouth and enter her lungs.  This can damage the lungs and lead to pneumonia.  We know it is hard, but it is important to follow the guidelines below for their safety.

CHILDREN OLDER THAN 3 YEARS OF AGE:
1. A full meal is allowed up to 8 hours before surgery.
2. A light meal (toast, milk, orange juice) is allowed up to 6 hours before surgery.  No fried or fatty foods like sausage and eggs!
3. Clear liquids (apple juice, water, black coffee, tea, clear broth) are allowed up to 2 hours before surgery.  No milk or lattes!

CHILDREN 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS OF AGE:
1. Light meal (toast, fruit, juice) or thick liquids, such as milk or orange juice, are allowed up to 6 hours before surgery.
2. Breast milk is allowed up to 4 hours before surgery.
3. Clear liquids (apple juice, water, popsicles) are allowed up to 2 hours before surgery.

INFANTS LESS THAN 6 MONTHS OF AGE:
1. Breast milk and formula are allowed up to 4 hours before surgery.
2. Diluted apple juice or sugar water is allowed up to 2 hours before surgery.
